ALA welcomes back Benjamin Wilson, who shared this thought-proving session during ALA Today: The Virtual Conference. For this webinar he will continue examining the epidemic of police brutality against black people and discuss ways in which the legal community can help prevent future abuses. Together with Moderator, Jessica Mazzeo, from ALA’s Committee on Diversity & Inclusion, we will explore well-known cases of racially motivated police killings in the 21st century, focusing on understanding the historical context of racism in America and its relationship to the current institution of policing. We will also discuss the role the media has played in galvanizing demonstrations against police brutality as well as actions legal professionals can take to eradicate systemic racism and prevent future killings. We will also provide more holistic solutions that go beyond the criminal justice system to include health care, housing and education.
Objectives:
- Illustrate the history of police brutality in America.
- Outline the role of systemic racism in historical and recent instances of police brutality.
